Breaking Patterns and Limiting Self Beliefs [Book Review]
A personality test nearly ruined Dr Benjamin Hardy's marriage to his beloved wife. Luckily his wife decided to give it a shot and now they are happily married with five children. At some point of our lives, we have probably done a personality test which tells us 'who we are'.
While it can be fun and entertaining to do such test from time to time, it can also be 'limiting' and blocking our own progress. Dr Benjamin's new book Personality Isn't Permanent addresses this [and many others] along the way.
You become who you choose to be.
As an Organisational Psychologist, Dr Benjamin understands through his personal experiences that personality can and does change. It is not innate but trained. His own childhood traumas and encounters had left him confused and hopeless. It was through a two years church mission that completely changed his life. By crafting his new identity, he was able to develop new capabilities and a powerful vision for himself.
What matters is who you want to be. What matters are the choices you make.
The book explores different myths and truth of personality, teaches you how to transform your traumas and shift your own story. By tapping into your subconscious mind, behaviours and emotions, you will start to shift your personality.
Your personality is merely a by-product or reflection of where you are emotionally.
Lastly for us to completely evolve, we also have to evaluate our environment which includes our peers, external influences and experiences, basically anything that surrounds us.
Your environment should be full of strategic reminders of who you want to be, helping you to become your desired future self. Goals don't become realities without constant reminders.
The book is filled with constant reminders and thought provoking questions that will make you pause and reflect from time to time. It is helpful to journal down your own journey as you read and experiment with the tips and techniques that Dr Benjamin provides. One of my all time favourites to-go-to book which has brought so much insights to my own personality and continues to shape what I am moving forward. I hope this will help you as much as it did for me.
