3 Unexpected Important Life Lessons from BOA Golf Shoes
"What was that?"
My very first thought when I saw the chunky BOA clip on the golf shoes. It looked awful and wrong. The design didn't appeal to me at all. I just kept looking at the clip. My girlfriend shared the same sentiments. I didn't bother to find out more. I didn't want to know more. It was ugly and unappealing. I wrote it off because it didn't click (no pun intended) with me.
A month later as my search for golf shoes continued, I met Yee Boon. I am a sucker for great salesmanship. I love it when the salesperson is patient, do subtle selling focusing on the benefits and of cos unlimited trying ons.
That day I must have tried on more than eight pairs of golf shoes. There was just one pair of (lucky size 6) BOA golf shoes. I skipped past it initially but Yee Boon convinced me to give it a try and I did because she was so encouraging.
It was my lucky size (and day) and the next thing I knew I had fallen in love with the BOA technology. I was sold. It was convenient, easy, simple and more efficient way of wearing a pair of shoes. How could I have said no to it earlier? What have I been missing out?
It was an epiphany moment for me. Who knew the buying process had made me realise these 3 unexpected and important life lessons:
1. We don't know what we don't know.
When we 'reject' something out of our comfort zone (shoe laces) we might just missed out the opportunity to try something new or embrace a new experience. We remain the same by thinking and behaving the same way that have always worked for us (why change).
2. Who we choose to be and associate with can impact our life (choices and direction) in a compelling way.
In this case because I was more receptive to try it and Yee Hoon had been nudging me to take action. Unlike the first encounter my girlfriend who had previously disliked it (she is still warming up to the BOA technology), I wasn't keen to try it at all. I had allowed her preferences (not her fault) to influence my decision. Don't we all do that sometimes - the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the jobs we do or the news we watch are influenced by somebody.
3. “The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Once I realised the benefits of the BOA technology, the clip was no longer a sore eye sight. I am now focusing more on what it can do than what it looks like. I am even beginning to like the look of it. The clip is still the same but because I am now intrigued by the functionality and the technology, everything else becomes an icing on the cake!
Nonetheless to say I got my lucky shoes and went home googling all about the BOA technology. Guess what my next pair of running shoes will be?
