A True Test To Our Values

Amid the COVID19 where the infection seem to be spreading quickly, this pandemic appears to be a true test to our values. A moment where actions triumphs over words. A period where we reveal what truly matters to us and where we stand where humanity is concerned.

From unscrupulous businesses raking prices on masks and thermometers, people hoarding daily necessities to racism remarks on the Chinese nationals, these selfish behaviours are real and ugly but are they necessary for our survival? Who and what have we become in the process of protecting ourselves? At what price are we willing to pay (or not) for basic human rights and self respect?

I used to think that turning up for work despite being sick was a sign of commitment and dedication to my work. Now it seems so selfish, thoughtless and ego-boosting. It was a sign of self-fulfilling prophecy of making myself feel more important and superior than others.

My first lesson on honesty was perhaps during my golfing days where one would be marking our own scorecards. Initially I cheated to make myself feel better but subsequently I realised I was only lying to myself. My scorecard might looked good but my golfing skills would show me the reality of where I stood.

Do you have a fever, running nose or cough? Are you isolating yourself if you are unwell? Will you be fully transparent and open to your whereabouts if you are under homestay notice? Do you chase away your tenants if they are from China, leaving them with no place to stay? Do you hoard toilet rolls and daily necessities to deprive your fellow countrymen who are caught in the same situation as you are? Is it only China's fault that this virus has reached a world-wide pandemic?

At this crucial time one's honesty is put to the test. What is the (true) cost of your values?
